ICL COBOL to IBM COBOL Conversion

This course provides instruction in writing and executing COBOL programs on the IBM mainframe for those COBOL programmers coming from an ICL platform. Both COBOL-II and COBOL/370 are covered.

Audience

The course is intended for those programmers who have used COBOL for a number of years and are either:

moving from an ICL environment to an IBM environment; or
need to update their COBOL knowledge.

Prerequisites

The course is suited to all experienced COBOL programmers. It is not intended for anyone new to COBOL. In addition, unless having previous IBM mainframe experience, attendance of the z/OS MVS Concepts, Using TSO/ISPF and Using z/OS MVS JCL courses is strongly advised.

Duration

2 - 4 days depending on the level of detail that is required. Practical exercises will also extend the duration.

Course objectives

On completion of this course, the delegate will be able to:

Know the major differences between ICL and IBM COBOL.
Understand, define and use COBOL-II extensions.
Comprehend the use of COBOL/370 and be aware of its intrinsic functions.
Find information in either a COBOL-II or a COBOL/370 formatted dump as to assist bug-fixing.
Have an understanding of IBM's Virtual Storage Access Method files (VSAM).

Course contents

COBOL-I refresh including differences between ICL and IBM COBOL.
COBOL-II (extensions to the 1974 standard).
COBOL/370: Intrinsic Functions and Language Environment/370.
Handling Run-time errors.
VSAM file processing.
