Introduction to the IBM Mainframe

This course provides a thorough introduction to IBM's z/OS MVS operating system and environment, and centres on TSO, ISPF and JCL.

Audience

The course is intended for delegates who are new to computing or who are moving to the IBM z/OS MVS environment from a mini or mid-range one.

Prerequisites

The course is not only suited to those delegates with a proven aptitude to computing but also to those with or without a programming background or indeed those delegates from other disciplines.

Duration

The course is intended to run over 5 or 6 days but may need to be extended further depending on the delegates' experience. Practical exercises will take part throughout the course.

Course main objectives

On completion of this course, the delegate will:

Have a reasonable understanding of IBM hardware and software
Have an appreciation of the MVS operating system
Understand the concept of Virtual Storage
Understand the technical terms involved
Be proficient in the use of TSO/ISPF and in particularly the PDF editor with regards to manipulating files and data
Use the more common options in ISPF such as BROWSE and the Utilities
Use ISPF Help, BookManager and QuickRef
Define the function and use of JCL
Code syntactically correct JCL statements and deal with failures
Understand Conditional execution
Submit Jobs and deal with run-time errors
Be able to code both in-stream and cataloged procedures
